A persistent problem arose with respect to the faculty`s access to the building and the perception that the administration and the RMT were somewhat arbitrary in admission decisions. A faculty member was denied access to begin his research, which caught the CEW`s attention. As the denial of access has not yet been resolved, the faculty member`s ability to continue his professional, creative and research activities is compromised. It seems that an administrative decision implies either (a) that the promotion of knowledge by the highest levels of research is not a necessary part of our work as faculty members in a university (what it is), or (b) that it is an attempt to modify or determine our work tasks in which teaching tasks are considered essential to our research activities. We are still in discussions with the administration on the current letter. Please note that the timetable for negotiating a new collective agreement has been significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the terms of the current agreement remain in effect until a new agreement is negotiated and ratified by NASA members. Shortly after the move to distance course delivery during the winter semester, we worked with the Faculty Association of the University of Calgary to negotiate an agreement that provides for an automatic one-year extension of the term of office and the doctoral application process for the Holding Track academic staff (university staff are not required to take the deferral if they are in the normal course). Each faculty member can spend their annual leave in any way. As many of you know, the deadline for the declaration of Tenure, Promotion and Renewal is open until June 15, 2020 and applications are due September 1, 2020. The Council of General Faculties (GFC) has the authority to define the evaluation criteria and establish academic standards for the mandate, promotion and renewal, and can delegate the development of faculty guidelines to faculty boards to ensure that different aspects of different disciplines are taken into account in the application of the criteria. Therefore, the evaluation criteria are described in the GFC Academic Staff Criteria and Processes Handbook (gFC Handbook) and in faculty guidelines for your department or faculty.
The first complaint related to complaints that the Annual Teacher Assessment (SET) had been amended without consultation with the CEW. Teachers who taught spring courses were ordered to use an online SET with a second section on e-learning. This section appears to have been designed to collect data on student responses/satisfactions to the provision of online courses. This new section referred to a change in the evaluation system, which was carried out without consultation with the CEW, as requested by section 9.03 of the collective agreement. The evaluation was also contrary to VPRAA`s spring letter, which indicated that the faculty would be exempt from the requirement to obtain an evaluation of its teaching-related duties for the calendar year. Finally, we have an individual responsibility to take care of ourselves and a collective responsibility to take care of each other. Please follow the health guidelines that have been set out by our experts – and together we will get by! The CEW was assured that a clearer process for the faculty to request “days instead” and give them “days” was coming from the administration, and we look forward to seeing and discussing a draft of this document.
